Children's Art Workshop

Our mission is to serve all children interested in learning about art.

Welcome to the Children’s Art Workshop! For almost 40 years, we have served children interested in learning about art in the ASU community and the Phoenix area.

The Eleanor A. Robb Children’s Art Workshop is unique as a community program that has a mission to serve all children (ages 5 to 15) throughout the Phoenix area who are interested in learning about art. ASU School of Art’s art education majors who are in the process of becoming art educators or working in the arts will teach the children participating in the Children’s Art Workshop. The Children’s Art Workshop is part of the art teaching certification program in the Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts and is only taught in the Fall semester. During this time, our young artists will engage with intentionally designed curricula produced by our art education majors that will incorporate a variety of media that may include drawing, painting, ceramics, sculpture, printmaking and photography.

Why should you enroll your child in the Children’s Art Workshop?

What makes this program unique? Our workshop teachers are art education majors who have a strong desire to become arts educators and a passion for the arts. They bring their various backgrounds, knowledge, training, and skills to the Children’s Art Workshop to create intentionally crafted experiences for youth. As this program is housed with the School of Art, our young artists will have access to arts facilities that support work at the college level. We aim to be a bridge between the university and the community, reflecting the critical work and possibilities of art education.

History of Children’s Art Workshop

Since the 1980s, the Eleanor A. Robb Children’s Art Workshop has been a community program hosted by the Art Education program within the School of Art at Arizona State University. The program’s mission is two-fold: 1) to serve all children interested in learning about art, and 2) to prepare Art Education students to implement arts instruction with K-12 students. The Children's Art Workshop has served children, primarily ages 5 to 15, who are interested in learning about art throughout the Phoenix area for approximately forty years. The Workshop is funded by and named after Eleanor A. Robb, a longtime supporter and arts advocate. In the spirit of her steadfast championing of the arts and youth engagement, the program has been a pillar in the community, continuously creating space for youth arts participation and preparing the next generation of art educators.

The Future of Children’s Art Workshop

The Children’s Art Workshop has been under the supervision and leadership of Dr. Bernard Young for the past 37 years. Upon his retirement in 2025, the Art Education program plans to continue Dr. Young and the Workshop’s legacy of providing quality art programming to the youth of the ASU and Phoenix metro communities. Fall 2025 will mark the continuation of the Children's Art Workshop under the supervision of Dr. Amber Chanel Coleman.

Changes to the Children’s Art Workshop

As a legacy program within the ASU and Phoenix metro communities, we understand the importance of continuing the heart and momentum of the Children’s Art Workshop. Starting Fall 2025, there will be a few updates to the workshop’s structure:

  • We will have seven weeks instead of the usual ten weeks.
  • Our usual structure of media-themed classes will shift to a concept-based model, where teachers will explore a range of media with each age group.
  • During our last week, we will host a celebration where students, family, friends and community members can come together to enjoy and recognize the amazing work of our students and teachers.
