A degree in Art History
A dynamic center for the investigation of culture and the visual arts
The art history program offers a rich and diverse curriculum that explores art's history in economic, social and political contexts, and the relationship of visual art to other disciplines, such as literature, science, anthropology, media and performance studies. The program offers several degree tracks: a BA in art history and museum studies; an MA in art (art history) and a PhD in art history, theory and criticism, as well as a minor in art history, available to students who wish to complement their undergraduate degree in other majors. The faculty emphasize critical concepts in their teaching including a close study of artists, objects and technologies and mentor students at all levels of study.
In May 2018, ASU partnered with the Los Angeles County Museum of Art on a new master’s fellowship designed to increase diversity among museum professionals.
Dreamscape Learn at the School of Art
Art history in Dreamscape takes students beyond textbooks and slideshows, letting them explore cultural and historical sites across time through fully immersive, virtual reality experiences. Engaging with scale, light, material and design in full context, students uncover the stories, beliefs and cultural forces that shaped the world's greatest landmarks while grappling with enduring questions about religion, power, life and culture that build visual literacy, critical thinking and curiosity across every field of study. Dreamscape Learn experiences are currently being piloted in ARS 101 on campus and online.
