2019 Life-Learner Art Workshops

Looking for enrichment, creativity, and artistic growth? Spend the weekend with the School of Art at Arizona State University exploring a wide range of studio practices. The Life-Learner Workshops will be offered in a variety of art forms including experimental ceramics, papermaking, floral design and more. The workshops are taught by ASU graduates and professional artists. All are welcome, from beginner to advanced levels of experience. All materials will be provided.

Workshop fee: $200. Payment in full is due when you register. This includes materials.

2019 Spring Workshops Offered 

Fashion Illustration by Caroline Estelle

March 23rd | Saturday | 9a.m. - 4p.m. (lunch break 12-1pm) - REGISTRATION CLOSED

In this studio setting, you will learn to illustrate the figure from a live female model wearing fashion apparel. By utilizing methods of elongating, simplifying and stylizing the figure—including face, hands and feet—you will transform your model drawings into fashion design sketches. Limit 20

Classy and Custom: Handset Letterpress Cards by Kelsey Reiman

March 30th | Saturday | 9a.m. - 4p.m. (lunch break 12-1pm)

Create your own unique greeting cards! Learn the basics of traditional letterpress, typesetting and printing by choosing from tens of thousands of image blocks and movable type in the largest type collection in North America. You will leave with a set of exclusive greeting cards to send to friends and family. Limit 20

Alternative Ceramic Process: Casting Organic Vessels by Brandi Lee Cooper

April 6th | Saturday | 9a.m. - 4p.m. (lunch break 12-1pm)

Transform plants into ceramic forms! Gather materials and inspiration from the natural world to build your own organic vessel using an experimental casting procedure. All materials provided. Limit 20

Jewelry and Chain Weaving by Matagi Sorensen

April 6th | Saturday | 9a.m. - 4p.m. (lunch break 12-1pm)

Create a hand-woven silver or copper chain from start to finish using the ancient Viking knit technique. These chains are versatile and can be turned into necklaces, bracelets or earrings. All materials will be provided and individual guidance will be given as well as demos and examples. Limit 10

April 6th | Saturday | 9a.m. - 4p.m. (lunch break 12-1pm)

Did you know you can create your own camera out of a coke can, a shoebox or even an entire room? Build your own sculptural camera and photograph surreal scenes of the world around you, all while learning about optics and the magical world of light. You will learn to build their own camera, expose and develop photographs in the darkroom, and turn negatives into digital files for professional printing. Limit 12

Watercolor Monotype by Lizzy Taber

April 6th | Saturday | 9a.m. - 4p.m. (lunch break 12-1pm)

Create bright and lively one of a kind monotypes! This process is fun, nontoxic, and allows for a range of results for beginners to advanced artists. In this two-day workshop you will leave with multiple prints that you can frame for your home or give as gifts. All materials will be provided and individual guidance will be given as well as demos and examples. Limit 12 

Floral Design by Morgan Anderson

April 13th | Saturday | 9a.m. - 4p.m. (lunch break 12-1pm)

Sculpt with flowers! Cultivate your creativity and explore the use of nature as a medium while you practice the art of floral arrangement. Limit 20

Ceramic Baskets by Eliza Weber

April 13th | Saturday | 9a.m. - 4p.m. (lunch break 12-1pm)

Create unique baskets using a combination of hand-built and wheel thrown techniques! Accentuate handheld and carried baskets with a variety of colors and surface decorations. All materials provided, but bring ceramic tools if already have. Limit 20.
