Job description:

The School of Art in the Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts at Arizona State University seeks to hire multiple full-time (1.0 FTE) 9-month (academic year) open category and open rank fashion faculty positions in the areas of design, fashion business management, technology, and fashion studies, beginning August 2023. Position responsibilities include teaching/mentoring students and performing service activities, and may include research/creative activities. These positions will be located in our Los Angeles facility and may also serve our online degree programs. The annual base salary range for these positions is $65,000 to $85,000: Assistant Teaching Professor ($65,000-$75,000), Assistant Clinical Professor ($70,000-$80,000), Professor of Practice ($75,000-$85,000), Assistant Professor, tenure-track ($75,000-$85,000).

ASU FIDM seeks candidates for our LA program with a rich and varied skill set in the field of fashion with a focus on design, merchandising, fashion business management, technology, theory, and/or history. Candidates will have an informed perspective in the areas of sustainability, equity and inclusion, cultural appropriation, technology, innovation and other areas impacting the fashion industry. The successful candidates demonstrate a commitment to the field of fashion, design and related career paths, inclusive of connections to industry partners and leadership organizations.     

Successful candidates will teach beginning, intermediate, and/or advanced undergraduate courses while also mentoring students. Teaching may occur in person and/or online. The successful candidates will work with a diverse student population and are able to communicate to students their progress, while recognizing their diversified backgrounds. The successful candidates will have service responsibilities including, but are not limited to, participating in faculty meetings, serving on committee(s), and attending or participating in non-committee activities, including recruitment, retention, and professional development activities.

Demonstrated skills based on area of expertise:

• Fashion Design Candidates: Successful candidates must demonstrate skills in fashion design and collection development. Skills should include flat pattern making, draping and apparel construction, technical product development, sketching, sewing and tailoring. Skills in 3D apparel visualization technologies (e.g., Browzwear and Clo) are highly valued. 
• Fashion Business Management Candidates: Successful candidates will have expert operating knowledge of Microsoft Office Suites for use in fashion merchandising and buying practices (Excel, Word, PowerPoint). Experience in PLM is highly valued. The candidate may demonstrate expertise in related areas including fashion styling, retail and brand strategy, digital marketing, international sourcing, or visual merchandising and promotion. Preferred areas of expertise include Merchandising, Brand Management, Consumer Behavior, and Digital Retailing. 
• Technical Design and Product Development Candidates: Successful candidates in technical design will have knowledge of software in apparel design, manufacturing applications, product development, grade, fit, production, digital pattern making, digital prototyping,  and in the areas of technology innovations impacting the fashion industry. Skills should include knowledge of advanced Product Design and 3D softwares such as: Optitex PDS & 3D, Browzwear, and Gerber Accumark.
• Fashion Studies Candidates: Successful candidates will have expertise in fashion history, theory, media, and/or communications and will possess knowledge of fashion in cultural, economic, and social contexts.

ASU FIDM (Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising), is the fashion program within the School of Art in the Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts at Arizona State University. Required qualifications:

• Terminal degree or equivalent combination of education and relevant experience, international candidates must have a terminal degree in an appropriate field
• Demonstrated evidence of commitment to equity and inclusion consistent with the Charter | Arizona State University
• Demonstrated excellence in teaching with at least three years experience teaching in higher education
• Demonstrated excellence in their respective field of study

Desired qualifications:

• Demonstrated evidence of professional and/or research activity
• Demonstrated ability to teach undergraduate beginning, intermediate, and/or advanced courses 
• Demonstrated knowledge of online teaching platforms, including Canvas
• Demonstrated experience developing courses in-person and/or online 
• Demonstrated evidence of mentorship activities
