Job description:

The School of Art in the Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts at Arizona State University welcomes candidates to apply for a full-time, fixed-term, Instructor position, based in Tempe/Phoenix AZ, beginning August 2023. The position will serve undergraduate students in a variety of painting and drawing courses, potentially including figure drawing and figure painting courses. We seek candidates whose experience and teaching will contribute to an equitable and inclusive learning and work environment. This position is on the ASU Tempe Campus.

The School of Art seeks a candidate with rich and varied knowledge of technical and conceptual issues in painting and drawing to teach lower and upper division undergraduate courses. Candidates will have proficiency teaching a wide range of painting and drawing media, materials, and subjects. Candidates will have proficiency teaching perceptual and abstract methods within painting and drawing. Duties will include teaching five courses per semester to a diverse student population with varying skill levels. Candidates will have experience or ability to teach in various modalities, including online or hybrid, and in-person courses. The candidate will have strong organizational skills to effectively communicate and the ability to utilize a digital platform (Canvas) to offer course materials and facilitate grading and feedback. The ideal candidate will contribute to the diversity and inclusion of the School by bringing ways of teaching, subject expertise, and/or unique experiences that expand conversations and knowledge in the classroom.

Required qualifications:

  • Master of Fine Arts or equivalent terminal degree in the field (completed by employment date)
  • Demonstrated evidence of commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion
  • Demonstrated excellence in teaching in higher education

Desired qualifications:

  • Ability to teach all levels of undergraduate courses
  • Ability to teach a wide variety of painting and drawing media
  • Ability to teach online and hybrid courses on a digital platform
  • Ability to organize and communicate clearly
  • Ability to teach figure drawing and painting
