Job description:

The School of Art in the Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts at Arizona State University seeks a full-time, 9-month (academic year) Assistant Teaching Professor in the Art History program with a focus on art appreciation and introductory Western and Asian survey courses as well as upper-level Asian art courses, beginning August, 2023. This position will serve online and/or in-person undergraduate students on the ASU Tempe Campus. We seek candidates whose experience and teaching will contribute to an equitable and inclusive learning and work environment.

The School of Art seeks a candidate with a rich and varied skill set in the field of Art History. The successful candidate will have knowledge of the broad spectrum of Western and Asian art history. The successful candidate will teach upper and lower division large scale (100+ capacity) undergraduate lecture courses online and in-person, which may include but are not limited to ARS 100/ARS 300 Intro to Art; ARS 201 Art of Asia; ARS Issues in South Asian and Himalayan Art; ARS 494 Buddhist Art. The successful candidate will develop and utilize support materials to help students navigate and employ various educational tools and resources, and schedule regular class announcements and reminders to assist students with their time management and workflow. The successful candidate will work with a diverse student population and will communicate to students their progress, while recognizing their diversified backgrounds. The successful candidate will have experience mentoring and advising students on such topics as research methods and practices. The successful candidate will be able to utilize Canvas to organize their course work and facilitate grading. The successful candidate will have experience revising and developing curriculum and researching and implementing digital tools for class discussions. This position will have service responsibilities, which may include, but are not limited to supervising, coordinating, mentoring, and assessing the instruction of teaching assistants and faculty associates within their assigned area, as well as participating in the Design School/SOA Online Programs Committee and contributing to the online art history strategic planning. Required qualifications:

  • Doctor of Philosophy degree in History and Theory of Art 
  • Demonstrated evidence of commitment to equity and inclusion consistent with the aims of the ASU Charter.
  • Demonstrated excellence in teaching with at least 10 years art history teaching experience (5 years of FT online teaching experience) in higher education  

Desired qualifications:

  • Demonstrated ability to teach all levels (upper-division and lower-division) of undergraduate courses online and in-person
  • Demonstrated ability to teach large-scale courses with 100 or more students
  • Demonstrated evidence of administrative or organizational experience
  • Demonstrated evidence of faculty mentorship
  • Demonstrated evidence of a commitment to ongoing professional development
