Lawrence Gipe’s practice ranges across painting, drawing, video and installations that engage political themes of power, visual propaganda and historical narrative. He recently won a prestigious University of Arizona Confluence Grant for “Documenting Operation Streamline”, an on-going drawing project recording the plight of undocumented immigrants on their journey through the Arizona court system and the controversial “Operation Streamline” process - as photographs are prohibited in court and detention centers, the images from this latter project have been used to illustrate news reports on PBS, Univision, the AZ Daily Star, truthout.org; and others. As an art critic and writer, Gipe has contributed reviews and feature articles to Flash Art, ArtScribe (UK) and the Santa Barbara Independent; from 1988-89, he was a regular art columnist for the L.A. Weekly and in 2011-12 he wrote reviews for the LA-based Artillery magazine.
