NEXT EVENT: Monday March 24
2 a.m.-3:30 a.m.

Jeffrey Gibson’s paintings and sculptures combine geometric abstract painting with the traditional craft materials of his Native American heritage. Gibson’s provocative use of animal hide and abstraction relates both to indigenous culture and challenges the trajectory of modern art. Mixed media sculptures combine traditional craft with Op Art painting: drumheads—linked and suspended as a column—are painted with geometric patterns; a recycled army blanket is painted with related motifs and strung to a flagpole. Gibson's artworks are in the permanent collections including Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, the Smithsonian's National Museum of the American Indian, and the Denver Art Museum. Gibson has recently joined the faculty in the Studio Arts Program at Bard College and is a 2012 TED Foundation Fellow.
