The Step Gallery serves as both an MFA thesis exhibition space as well as a proposal-driven and student-run gallery at Grant Street Studios.
The Step Gallery serves as both an MFA thesis exhibition space and a proposal-driven and student-run gallery in the recently renovated Grant Street Studios building in downtown Phoenix. The MFA exhibitions represent one of the requirements for the fulfillment of the MFA degree under School of Art and Graduate Education procedures; the proposal-driven exhibitions allow undergraduates, graduates, alumni and faculty unique curatorial and exhibition opportunities.
Exhibitions may include group shows mounted by different areas of the school; alumni or current student exhibitions, including faculty exhibitions; and exhibitions organized in cooperation with campus galleries, conference organizers or other fine art organizations. These may include, but are not limited to, showing work from local collections or other universities as well as traveling shows or exchange exhibitions from peer institutions. Exhibition proposals are solicited from the School of Art community and reviewed and selected by the school's galleries and exhibitions committee, which is comprised of local arts professionals. Learn more about submitting proposals for this gallery.
The gallery teaching assistant, gallery technician and members of the gallery exhibitions class administer and provide installation assistance to the exhibitors. Step Gallery, as part of the Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts, hosts exhibitions of artworks in which the content, subject matter or themes may challenge the sensibilities, perceptions and beliefs of some individuals. Please exercise discretion when choosing to view the works and preview for children.
