Muriel Magenta
Muriel Magenta is a new genre artist working in computer imaging, video, multimedia installation and sculpture. In her current work, she explores the interface between various electronic media while continuing her investigation of the installation format. In many of her works she creates a visual experience in an actual space, and then transmits it over electronic environments. Interdisciplinary collaborations with other fields of inquiry such as sociology, information technology and theatre are an important aspect of her work. The following creative research projects are examples of Magenta's approach to creative research:
Magenta created digital projected video sets for the ASU Herberger Institute MainStage production Machinal. In collaboration with the Herberger Institute School of Theatre and Film, the collaboration involved working closely with the director of the play, stage technicians, as well as sound, lighting and costume designers. Eleven video episodes were innovated by Magenta for this production.
In L'Alluvione Devasta Firenze, Magenta created an animated component for a collaborative digital art Web project interpreting the affect of the devastating 1966 flood of Florence upon the Santa Croce Basilica. Magenta's component featured an Italian newspaper animated via Flash action scripting. The overall project is an interdisciplinary collaboration among School of Art, School of Music and College of Design faculty artists - Ellen Meissinger, Dan Collins, Mary Erickson, Mookesh Patel and Rodney Rogers.
Shelter Against Violence: A Case for Empowerment is a community engagement project involving a partnership between Arizona State University and YWCA Haven House shelter in downtown Phoenix. Magenta designed an art and technology approach toward self-sufficiency for shelter residents through teaching expressive and computer skills. Twenty-six digital storytelling Web sites and a broadcast quality video documentary were developed by the shelter residents, School of Art graduate students and Magenta. DVD copies of the documentary video are currently in 126 prestigious college and university libraries nationally and internationally.
Magenta has created additional Web sites to document her creative research:
