Gallery Technician Position
The position, when available, will be posted at Student Employment by mid-August. To apply, you must be eligible for work-study. You are responsible for knowing your financial aid eligibility.
The gallery technician position may be one person working with both the Harry Wood Gallery and the Step Gallery, or the position may be divided between two people, one person responsible for each gallery.
The gallery technician is responsible for:
- Maintaining physical condition of gallery during exhibitions: cleanliness of floor, painted woodwork, windows, making sure lights are on and in good working order. Gallery should be checked once a day during an exhibition.
- Maintaining supply and equipment inventory: track supplies and monitor condition of tools and gallery furniture (pylons and pedestals). Make recommendations for ordering as necessary.
- Assisting with installation and striking of gallery exhibitions according to prior arrangement with MFA candidates or other exhibiting parties and gallery director.
- Assisting with installation of exhibitions organized by the Gallery Practices class.
- In the absence of gallery director, be prepared to coordinate transition of gallery from one candidate or party to the next: supervise exhibition coordinators from the gallery class when they receive and checkout gallery keys and parking passes and check gallery condition including tool and supply inventory.
The gallery technician may also be asked to:
- Fabricate pylons and pedestals.
- Set lighting and perform minor repairs to light fixtures.
- Monitor VCR backup system for gallery security.
- Set up gallery sandwich board on mall.
- Monitor condition of glass case adjacent to gallery.
